Brittney Griner, Mercury Set WNBA First Quarter Record vs. Sun

Mercury is the hottest planet in our solar system, and the Phoenix Mercury had the hottest WNBA quarter on Thursday night against the Sun.

Phoenix broke the Liberty's July 23 record of 44 points with 45 in the first quarter versus Connecticut.

Moriah Jefferson's 37-foot buzzer-beater broke the record.  Nine Mercury players scored in the record-setting quarter. Brittney Griner and Diana Taurasi led with nine points.

Phoenix made 16-of-17 field goals, including 6-of-7 from three, and 7-of-8 free throws. The squad has 12 assists on 16 baskets.

The Mercury's offensive surge is surprising given their league-worst 78.0 points per game.

However, the offense slowed after the first quarter. Phoenix scored seven points on 1-of-9 shooting in the second due to 11 turnovers.

The Mercury lead the league with 15.7 turnovers per game. Phoenix won 90–84 despite the Sun's 52–48 halftime deficit.
